THE SHARK ALERT TEAM
The SHARK ALERT TEAM on Pensacola Beach is a group of volunteers who try to reduce the
death toll from shark attacks. They are easily identified: Their red t-shirts with
"SHARK ALERT TEAM" in bold white letters can be seen from far away. They are
well trained at
spotting the telltale presence of man eating sharks. They coordinate their actions with
two-way radios and cellular phones.
They are often given tips from banner plane pilots who patrol just
off the surf line.
The Team has been criticized as being a bunch of smartasses who
want to run tourists off the Beach. The Team does not let such
criticism deter it from accomplishing its mission.
The Team has a good track record but its record isn't flawless.
Just last summer an Island visitor was eaten by a Mako shark at
Casino Beach. All the other people there left the water when the
Team went into action. The woman who was eaten couldn't respond:
She had been immobilized due to horrible jellyfish stings and could
barely move.
A word to the wise: If you see the SHARK ALERT TEAM in the surf
pay attention.
